Meet Ruthie.

Ruthie Hauge is the photo director at The Capital Times in Madison, WI, where she sets the visual strategy for one of the state's most respected independent newsrooms. Her work has been recognized with more than 80 journalism awards. She is a regular speaker and mentor at UW-Madison's School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Ruthie's roots are in photojournalism and fine art, with a BFA in photography and drawing from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design.

Ruthie's roots are in photojournalism and fine art. She studied photography at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design on scholarship, interned at the Irish Times in Dublin, and spent nearly seven years as a Staff Photographer for Sun-Times Media in the Chicago area — covering the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti to Paul McCartney at Wrigley Field. Music history is a passion of hers, and she has spent years documenting musicians. She has also run her own photography business since 2005 and serves as photo director for Joey’s Song, a celebrity concert benefiting epilepsy research.

Career highlights include serving as the only news photographer granted exclusive access when Vice President Kamala Harris revisited her Madison childhood home in 2024, moderating a one-on-one ticketed conversation with former White House Photographer, Pete Souza, documenting music producer Butch Vig revisiting his past music studio and exhibiting her work to an international audience in Germany.
